What is Neuropsychiatry?

Neuropsychiatry is a subspecialized field that is based on the principles of neuroscience to combine the fields of neurology and psychiatry to solve complex brain conditions. According to the American Neuropsychiatric Association (ANPA), it is an “integrated study of psychiatric and neurological disorders.”

Traumatic Brain Injury, Alzheimer’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Tourette syndrome, Seizure disorder are classic examples of neuropsychiatric conditions that have both neurological and behavioral symptoms.

What is a Neuropsychiatric evaluation?

It is called as a neurobehavioral exam which is a combination of a complex mental status and neurological exam that assess overall brain function to diagnose complex behavioral issues which stem from underlying brain conditions

Who is a Neuropsychiatrist?

Physicians who have trained in fellowship in Neuropsychiatry or Behavioral Neurology after completing their residency in neurology, psychiatry or both.

What to expect?

After the initial consultation, the doctor may perform a brief cognitive testing and order neuroimaging such as MRI/PET scans, comprehensive neuropsychological test, labs, and gene testing.
