Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy

Customized treatments to restore and improve cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning (memory, focus, word-finding, problem-solving, etc.) following injury to the brain.

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) is a treatment designed to restore and improve cognitive, behavioral, and emotional function following acute brain injury. At Kaizen Brain Center, our doctors use evidence-based CRT methods to improve the patient’s quality of life at home, work, and in the community. Our highly specialized team collaborates with patients and caregivers to tailor treatment to the individual’s needs and goals.

CRT is designed to address the following problems:

  • Memory
  • Attention
  • Problem solving
  • Visual processing
  • Language
  • Reasoning
  • Executive functioning

Interventions aim to restore previously learned skills and establish new strategies to improve function. Patient and caregiver goals may include improvements in decision-making, planning, and goal management. They may also focus on increased success in daily activities, such as completing tasks, keeping appointments, and managing finances.

How It Works

We customize treatment to the patient’s personal objectives. Treatment may include:

  • Awareness training
  • Behavior management
  • Memory remediation
  • Social skills training
  • Psychoeducation

The duration of CRT depends on the individual. However, all programs begin with a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to measure the patient’s strengths and weaknesses. After the initial assessment, we conduct a CRT consultation and develop a treatment plan. Treatment typically includes individual weekly, 50-minute CRT sessions for 10 to 12 weeks. These sessions are systematic, structured, progressive, and include intensive learning and practice.

The Kaizen difference lies in our experience and unique expertise in treating traumatic brain injury and concussion. Many facilities claim to offer CRT, yet often these providers are not neuropsychologists and lack the specialized training and experience to provide effective, individualized treatment. Instead, they offer a one-size-fits-all program. While patients may experience some benefit from this care, they are also likely to spend unnecessary time on exercises in proficient areas rather than targeting the patient’s unique needs and areas of concern. The Kaizen team tailors the treatment to the patient, ensuring that he or she focuses efforts on the areas necessary to bring function to a higher level.

CRT is an exercise workout for the brain, and Kaizen is the gym. Our team of personal trainers guides the patient through appropriate exercises, educates them on correct technique, and provides a plan to improve the growth, health, and strength of overall cognitive functioning.
